Online Lottery Frauds and Email Lotto Scams · 2005

This is a collection of fraudulent “You have won the jackpot!” messages. We are not the source of these messages and we don’t send them! We just collect the ones we receive and document them for the benefit of people who might be tempted to take up the con artists’ offers. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission provides additional information about lottery scams and related email frauds.

If you’ve been a victim of a lotto scam like those shown below you may wish to contact an attorney or law enforcement officer in your state or country.

Please note: Scammers often use the names of legitimate lottery organizations, but that doesn’t mean the offer in the message is legitimate. Anyone can send a phony message that says: “This is the British National Lottery and you have won a prize!”—and that’s just what the scammers do. If you take the bait, the scammers will try to get you to send money to them to pay “taxes” or “processing fees” before the supposed prize is released, and then once they have your money in their hands you’ll never hear from them again. The basic rule to remember about lotteries is: if you didn’t enter, you can’t win. No legitimate lottery organization awards prizes to random people who have never entered their contest.
